Foliage focussed family garden
Before
The garden was mostly laid to lawn with an attractive decking area.
Brief
The family wanted to make more of the garden, have more privacy from the neighbours and screen unsightly bins. They wanted a tropical style garden with foliage being more important than flowers.
After
The main feature introduced was a curved wall, behind which bamboos in pots are grown to hide the fence and provide movement and privacy. This creates a nice additional seating area, which would be pleasantly shady in summer. The wall could also have been made out timber and wide enough to be used as a seat itself.
The garden wraps around the house, so a theme of stepping stones, continue the circular theme and help to connect the different spaces. Repeating colour and forms also help to do this. Purple tones from Acers, Black Elder and Heucheras, create a united design that looks good year round. Black elder provides beautiful pink flowers that bees love (and a pink elderflower champagne if you choose to make some!).
